College Smart: Healthy Student, Healthy Life CASSADY LANCE: According to author Elizabeth Irvine, healthy living isn't rocket science. It's about eating healthy, body awareness, and activity, and the dedication it takes to put all of those elements into play. So while students at the University of Houston study to ace subjects like math, science, and English, do they make the grade when it comes to living a healthy life? STUDENT 1: Sports is something I really enjoy. And it's really a part of my life. STUDENT 2: I'm a runner. I love running. I go to Memorial Park. I prefer the outdoors. STUDENT 3: Me, my roommate, we're both in really good shape. So we like to work out together. STUDENT 4: It's easier to come work out with a friend because I'll push her, and she'll push me to do more-- even though we're like tired and sore. CASSADY LANCE: A recent study also shows that young adults with children typically eat and weigh more than those without kids. Could the stress between parenthood and college be a direct effect on healthy living? STUDENT 4: We don't see a lot of people here. So I would assume that most, they're either doing projects at school, work, not coming here because of all the workload that we have to do. STUDENT 5: Especially during finals. A lot of people-- if you go to the library, it's packed, and you can't even find like a table to sit at because everyone's there. They stay overnight. STUDENT 2: I know some of my friends sit on the couch and watch TV to relieve their stress or to relax. For me, my relaxation is running. For some people, it's yoga, meditation. So I just I like to incorporate physical activity in my lifestyle. STUDENT 1: Where we see most of the clients that want to come in and want to work with a personal trainer, are those that really have a hard time coming in. They don't really enjoy exercising that much. So they need someone to hold them accountable. And they just want someone to guide them through the process, but we try and help them as good as we can. STUDENT 3: The people I work with, they go out to eat every single night. And they get like giant plates of food of hamburgers and fries and drinks and sodas all the time. And that's typical around everywhere. And I like to think of my place an active place. So you can't imagine what the people that don't have an active job do. CASSADY LANCE: Just how difficult is it to live a healthy life? You be the judge.
