Choosing Your Electives Kelvin: Did you know, that there are approximately 150 first year Arts courses to choose from? There are so many choices! Whichever program you're in, there will be courses that you are required to take to pursue the major that you have in mind. However, there will also be courses that you will take simply because you have an interest in it, or you want to know more about a particular subject area. These are your electives. Remember, first year is a great opportunity for exploration and discovery. Not every course that you take has to count toward your major or minor, but every course you do take, elective or not, will count toward your degree requirements. So here are a few tips to help you with choosing your electives. First, think back to high school. Were there any courses that you were particularly good at? And no, gym does not count as a course here. But maybe something like law, or anthropology, or world issues. Take this time to dive deeper into an area that you may be skilled in. Second, take a language or a culture course. Learning a new language or culture may open up many opportunities here at the university level and beyond. So take a chance, learning a new language may lead you to go on an international exchange. Third, read the course description. I know, reading in university. Crazy right? But sometimes, the area that the course falls under may not appeal to you, but simply reading the course description can spark an interest or curiosity. So enjoy choosing your electives. Remember, first year is a great opportunity to take a course that you may discover a passion for. So that's it for me. My name is Kelvin and this was "Choosing your Electives."
